With a focus on the Americas, continental Europe and Great Britain a recently released map provides the contact information of about 90 partner shops for EV conversions.

Wouldn’t it be great to see more classic cars converted to electric on our roads?

Many people would agree. However, so far the focus has been on rare iconic classics with project costs in the six-figure dollar range.

“At the moment one could get the impression that EV conversions are just for people with very deep pockets”, says Udo Kessler, one of the authors of the book “Deep Dive EV Conversion”.

But that is not the case. His own conversion of a 1993 Volvo 850 cost about 18,000 Euro.

With a focus on DIY and 2nd life components Kessler and his co-authors Johannes Huebner and Philip Schuster documented the Volvo conversion to enable readers to decide whether to start a conversion project on their own or with the help of a specialized shop.

Because of its complexity many of those interested in an EV conversion will need to go for the shop option. So, Kessler and his co-authors just launched a map which (to their knowledge) is the first website that aims at providing a global overview of conversion shops.

“The map includes quite a number of premium shops, too, but the idea is to make it clear that there are also many shops that offer more affordable conversions”, says Kessler who invites shop owners not listed to provide their data to be included.

At its start the map lists about 90 shops in countries from Australia to Dubai to Mexico.

The top three countries with the most shops are the USA (31 shops), Germany (21 shops), and the United Kingdom (18 shops).

Anybody considering an EV conversion can also have a look at “The collection”, another website by the book authors that features finished projects by shops and individuals.

Currently, the number of projects on the site is quite limited. However, hopefully the site will grow and show by example that it can be done for many classic cars.

“In promoting the idea of affordable EV conversions we see ourselves in line with others in the industry who also would like to see the number of projects grow”, says engineer Johannes Huebner who develops control boards and founded the openinverter forum where everything EV conversions is discussed.
